Francesco Brunery Antique Figurative Oil Painting, Cardinal And Chef, Framed
*The Apothecary’s Account* is an original oil on panel by Francesco Brunery (1845–1926), signed “F. Brunery” in the lower right corner. From a private Parisian collection, this work is in very good original condition, with no restoration, and retains its original gilded frame.
A seated cardinal examines an account with obvious surprise, while a head chef responds with a sweeping gesture. The cardinal’s scarlet robes contrast with the chef’s white attire, drawing attention to their animated exchange. The finely painted lace, gleaming silverware, gilded tassels, and dishes arranged on the table enrich the scene against the backdrop of a dark, paneled interior. The expressive faces and gestures reveal Brunery’s characteristic sense of humor and his focus on human behavior.
Born in Turin and also known as François Brunery, the artist studied in Paris under Jean-Léon Gérôme and Léon Bonnat. He became known for his meticulously painted genre scenes depicting cardinals in luxurious interiors, combining academic technique with a slightly satirical narrative.
The carved scrollwork of the original frame harmonizes with the painting’s rich color palette and elaborate décor. Measuring 71 × 58 cm in total, this framed work would make a captivating focal point in an office, a dining room, or a collection of European paintings.
