Blolo Bla Figurine – Baoulé Bride From The Afterlife
In the tradition of the Baoulé people of Côte d’Ivoire, the blolo bian (male) and blolo bla (female) statuettes represent spiritual spouses belonging to the Blolo, an invisible world parallel to that of the living. Each individual can maintain a special relationship with a husband or wife from this other world, who may influence their emotional life, fertility, or prosperity. These effigies were the subject of offerings and care intended to maintain a favorable relationship with their spiritual counterpart.
