Guglielmo Pugi (Fiesole, 1850 – Florence, c. 1915) was a highly successful Italian sculptor, one of the leading exponents of the late 19th-century academic style and Italian Art Nouveau. Active beginning in 1870, he established his studio in Florence, the city where he worked throughout his life. His workshop specialized in working with Carrara marble. He primarily created female busts, mythological figures, allegories, and genre scenes characterized by extreme grace, elegance, and meticulous attention to detail in the drapery. In addition to his numerous academic-style sculptures, among his best-known works is the bust of King Umberto I, commissioned for the main square of his hometown, Fiesole. Upon his death, his sons continued the business under the name “Fratelli G. e F. Pugi.” The Florentine studio enjoyed great international success, exporting a large portion of its production abroad, particularly to the United States. The workshop participated in major global exhibitions of the time, such as the 1901 Buffalo World’s Fair and the 1904 St. Louis World’s Fair. Today, Guglielmo Pugi’s works are highly sought after on the international antiques market and are featured in major collections and museums, including the Historical Museum of Volterra.
