Ivory Sculpture
Ivory sculpture group “La Rosière de Salency,” likely from Dieppe, accompanied by CITES certificate No. 2026/BE2865/CE.
The story is inspired by the “Fête de la Rosière,” a tradition of the town of Salency. This festival, held on June 8 of each year, honored the most virtuous young woman in the village. The winner received a crown of roses and a sum of money—an honor that generally ensured her marriage within the year. The criteria were extremely strict: the candidate and her family had to have impeccable conduct spanning four generations. The local lord selected the Rosière from among three candidates, following a public vote by the villagers to ensure the impartiality of the selection.
The Rosière was crowned following a solemn procession to the church and then to the Chapel of Saint Médard, which concluded with a country dance and symbolic tributes offered by the villagers.
