18th-century Carved Solid Wood Sculpture Depicting A Putto In Relief
A carved solid wood sculpture depicting a putto (or little angel/cherub) in relief, portrayed in dynamic motion. The body has a slight sway of the hips characteristic of the Baroque style. The right leg is bent forward while the left extends downward. The arms are raised upward and to the side, with the hands open. A draped piece of fabric wraps around his waist and extends behind his back, adding movement and depth to the overall composition. The natural patina and shades of brown reveal the grain and veins of the wood.
The sculpture retains visible traces of work done with a gouge and wood chisel. The surface has a varnished finish that catches the light with subtle reflections. Note the charm of the rounded, chubby face—typical of putti depictions—with a gentle smile and sunken eyes; the hair is rendered in voluminous, curly locks swept upward.
This type of figurative element was commonly used as a decorative feature in architecture or furniture (church altarpieces, mirror frames, cabinet pediments, or wall sconces), generally dating from the Baroque period—the 18th century.
