Silver And Vermeil Pyx – France, 1860
An elegant silver and vermeil pyx, made in France around 1860 by the Frères Favier workshop, as attested by the Minerva hallmark (950%) and the silversmith’s mark.
The piece features a rich decorative repertoire in the Neo-Renaissance style, with a curved circular base, a baluster shaft, and a finely embossed and chased covered bowl. The lid is surmounted by a radiating cross, while the entire surface is embellished with figurative medallions depicting Christ, the Virgin and Child, St. Joseph, and allegorical figures, alternating with vine branches, grape clusters, ears of wheat, pearls, and ornamental motifs—a clear reference to Eucharistic symbolism. The interior retains its original vermeil gilding.
The meticulous repoussé and chisel work, combined with the rich iconography and high quality of craftsmanship, make this ciborium an important example of French liturgical silverware from the second half of the 19th century.
