A polychrome sculpture known as a “Vienna Bronze”* depicting a German Shepherd (or wolfdog) standing on the alert, with a watchful gaze and ears pricked up, dating from the 19th century. A very fine example of the animal art found in Viennese productions of the period. Large enough for a collection (13.5 cm tall).

* Viennese bronzes:The tradition of Viennese bronze figurines is particularly widespread in France; it was introduced to Vienna by Mathias Bermann in 1850. Bermann specialized in metal ornaments for pipes; it was at this time that he began casting and painting figurines. This marked the beginning of Viennese bronzes, which would go on to achieve worldwide renown. Toward the end of the 19th century—the golden age of metalwork in Vienna—numerous workshops were established. Throughout the 19th century, artists created nearly 10,000 models of bronze figurines. These renowned works were exported to major cities such as New York, London, and Paris. Viennese bronzes are well known for their high technical quality as well as for the great attention paid to detail, movement, and expression. Each of these works is a one-of-a-kind piece; the chiseling is done by hand, and the details differ from one piece to another. (See ProAntic Magazine)
