"Pair Of Seditious Candlesticks With Silver-plated Bronze Marie-antoinette Profile, Late 18th Century"
Rare pair of so-called "seditious" candlesticks* in silver-plated bronze, chiseled socket mounted on a tapered shaft and on a round base decorated with palmette friezes and Greek friezes, with royalist decoration hidden in the socket presenting in shadow the profile of the deceased Queen Marie-Antoinette, from the post-revolutionary/Empire period, late 18th-early 19th centuries. These candlesticks are in good condition, they are of exceptional quality. Note: accident and hole in a bobèche, small crack in the top of a socket, scratches and wear of time, see photos. * Seditious objects: commissioned by royalists; this way of evoking the royal family after the revolution is a tribute paid to a bygone era without being disturbed. There are also so-called seditious engravings concealing hidden figures. (See notice of a pair of seditious urns or vases preserved at the Louvre Museum, n° OA 11833).
