19th-century English Bookcase, 370 Cm

A monumental English bookcase from the Victorian era, crafted around 1880. Made entirely of mahogany, it features a black paint finish that was applied at a later date. The interior has largely retained its original color, a warm reddish-brown mahogany.

The bookcase consists of three side-by-side sections, which together form an impressive ensemble. The upper section is crowned with profiled cornices adorned with refined dentil molding. The classical architectural design and symmetrical layout are characteristic of English cabinetmaking from the second half of the 19th century.

The upper section features six large glass-paned doors with delicate wooden muntins. Behind these are several adjustable shelves. The interior sides are fitted with traditional horizontal grooves, allowing the shelves to be placed at different heights.

The lower section consists of six large paneled doors, behind which are spacious storage compartments. Behind the central doors is also a drawer section comprising four mahogany drawers, fitted with richly decorated round brass handles in the Empire style.

The cabinet is fitted with traditional brass hardware. The name “Bramah, London” is visible on one of the locks. Bramah was a renowned English lock manufacturer, founded in the late 18th century and known for its high-quality security locks.

The structure consists of solid mahogany stiles, rails, and panels, assembled using traditional techniques. The profiled moldings and understated baseboard emphasize the piece’s architectural design.

A bookcase of this scale was originally intended for a large private library, an office, or a prestigious interior. The combination of glass doors, adjustable shelves, and enclosed storage space made this type of furniture particularly well-suited for large collections of books and documents.

The exterior has recently been painted black, while the mahogany interior has largely retained its natural appearance.

Slight signs of wear. Since the wood’s surface is not perfectly smooth throughout, various signs of wear are visible through the paint.
