Napoleon III-style Boulle-style Box Set
A small box adorned with the distinctive red and brass marquetry known as “Boulle marquetry,” named after the 17th-century French cabinetmaker André-Charles Boulle.
The decorative surface features arabesques and floral scrolls finely engraved in brass, inlaid with red-stained tortoiseshell or imitation tortoiseshell—a technique widely used in the 19th century for jewelry boxes, writing cases, and small furniture.
The box rests on graceful curved legs and is adorned on all sides with gilded brass hardware: beaded borders, scrollwork along the base, and sculpted corner fittings decorated with mask heads. The lock with a keyhole is also made of brass and harmonizes with the rest of the bronze decoration.
Slight signs of wear consistent with its age. Slight cracking in the lacquer. Key missing.
Dimensions: 41 L x 27 P
