"Flock by the Lake"

Oil on canvas,
Signed lower right,

A work by the French painter Armand Beauvais depicting a small flock of sheep on the hillside overlooking a lake—perhaps in Annecy, where the painter traveled—under the discreet gaze of a shepherd’s silhouette, faintly visible at the edge of the scene beneath the trees.
True to the naturalist tradition of the Barbizon School, the painter Armand Beauvais uses a harmonious palette of muted greens, earthy browns, and ochres, all enveloped by a sky in shades of gray and beige that lends this rural scene a subdued atmosphere.

The son of a successful lawyer from Romorantin, Armand Beauvais enjoyed a very comfortable financial situation that allowed him to live off his income for his entire life without ever feeling the commercial need to sell his works to make ends meet. He trained in painting under the great masters of his time, notably becoming a student of the etcher Eugène Desjobert and the famous academic painter Jean-Léon Gérôme. His talent was recognized by his peers throughout his career, earning him medals at the Salon des Artistes Français in 1882 and 1890, as well as at the prestigious World’s Fairs in Paris in 1889 and 1900.

His work draws its primary inspiration from the contemplation of nature and rural life, delicately immortalizing the horizons and sunken paths of the Berry region, while also finding subject matter in the seascapes of the Cotentin Peninsula, the shores of Lake Annecy, and even Brittany. Praised by the regionalist writer Hugues Lapaire for his ability to capture the melancholic charm of meadows, herds, and poplar trees, the painter passed away on July 25, 1911, in Saint-Aignan-sur-Cher, leaving behind a poetic testament to a rural France that has since disappeared
