The Three Graces, After B. Thorvaldsen, Biscuit Royal Copenhagen Manufacture, H 33cm
The three goddesses of Greco-Roman mythology, embodying Splendor, Joy, and Abundance, were sculpted in Rome by Bertil Thorvaldsen, a great Danish sculptor and rival of his elder, Canova, who had completed his statue a year earlier.
The work was created in 1819 and is now housed in the Thorvaldsen Museum in Copenhagen, while Canova's is kept at the Hermitage Museum in Saint Petersburg.
Unlike Canova, who was more sensual, Thorvaldsen remained faithful to the Neoclassical ideal of pure beauty, devoid of any emotional sentiment.
Our figurine, produced by the Royal Copenhagen Manufactory from 1870 onwards, based on L. Vieth's reduction, is a very fine reproduction of the formal perfection of the original marble sculpture.
