Wolfers Art Deco, Solid Silver Baptismal Cup, Brussels 1942–1969, Baron’s Crown
“Jade” baptismal cup, Wolfers, Brussels, after 1942—probably before 1960, solid silver, baron’s crown
An elegant solid silver baptismal goblet, crafted by the prestigious Wolfers firm in Brussels. Its sixteen-sided body, slightly flared toward the rim and rounded at the base, features the clean, geometric lines characteristic of Art Deco. The polished surfaces and the edges of the facets create a play of light that constitutes the essence of its decoration.
One of the sixteen sides is engraved with a baron’s crown featuring seven visible pearls, in accordance with Belgian heraldic custom. This personalization suggests that the goblet was intended for a child from a family bearing the title of baron, likely on the occasion of his or her baptism.
The base bears the Wolfers master’s mark as well as the A800 hallmark, indicating a silver fineness of 800 parts per thousand. The style of these hallmarks places its manufacture after 1942, likely before 1960.
This goblet belongs to the “Jade” line, designed in 1933 by Wolfers. Developed as a complete tableware set, this collection included, among other items, cutlery, serving platters, vegetable bowls, sauce boats, soup tureens, candlesticks, tea and coffee sets, salt shakers, napkin rings, bottle coasters, and pepper mills. Its aesthetic unity is based on balanced proportions and the simplicity of its faceted forms.
I also have listed on my Proantic page a pair of candlesticks, a complete tea and coffee set on a tray, and a cutlery set for twelve people, all from the same “Jade” line by Wolfers.
