Set Of Ten André Sornay Chairs, Black Lacquer And Solid Pine, Lyon, Circa 1960
A set of ten chairs designed and crafted by the Lyon-based cabinetmaker André Sornay (1902–2000), one of the leading figures in modern French furniture.
The frame is made of solid pine and forms solid rectangular frames with softened corners and slightly rounded edges. It rests on sled legs connected by a low crossbar.
The seat and backrest are lacquered black, which contrasts with the warmth of the pine and its pronounced grain.
The uprights are assembled using the “tigette” system, a method patented by Sornay. This allows for precise assembly and a very clear construction: the wooden pieces interlock, with small metal screws visible on the sides. The overall design is understated, rational, and highly architectural—characteristic of Sornay’s work.
