Solid silver beer mug – Chester, circa 1790 – 18th century
Description
English solid silver beer mug, dating from the late 18th century, circa 1790, likely made in Chester.
Cylindrical in shape and slightly flared, it rests on a circular, molded foot and features a wide, coiled handle ending in a thumb rest.
The body, entirely plain, is accented at the top by a molded border and at the base by several concentric bands.
The body bears an engraved inscription on three lines: “MSH – No. 4.”
This tankard exhibits the characteristics of late 18th-century English silverwork, with clean lines and balanced proportions.
The hallmarks, which are partially worn and difficult to identify, do not allow for certain confirmation of the silversmith or the exact date of manufacture. The piece is dated to around 1790, likely in Chester.
