School Clicker Made Of Turned Boxwood, 19th Century
A 19th-century English school instrument made of turned boxwood, known as a “Dame School Clicker” or “snapper.” It consists of a carefully turned, elongated body and a long wooden strip designed to produce a sharp clicking sound to attract the attention of students in small private schools known as “dame schools.” The wood exhibits a deep, aged patina and signs of wear consistent with prolonged use. The visible retaining wire appears to have been replaced, and a small wooden piece may be a later addition.
