Oil On Canvas, View Of The Capri Coastline By W. Wellers, 20th Century
After studying painting in Amsterdam and Berlin, Willem Welters embarked on a long journey through Italy, captivated by the beauty and scenery of our country. He visited Venice, Florence, and Rome, but around 1910 he decided to settle in Capri, where he worked for many years, forming friendships with artists who frequented the island—including Antonio Leto—and evolving and refining his painting style.
He arrived in Liguria in the mid-1930s and, after a brief stay on the Riviera di Levante, settled in Sanremo.
His painting focused primarily on landscapes, and his works were highly appreciated by the aristocratic and middle-class tourists who stayed in both Capri and Sanremo. Possessing remarkable technical skill—at times bordering on virtuosity, undoubtedly stemming from his Dutch training—he skillfully combined the chromatic tones and luminous qualities characteristic of the purely Neapolitan school. The work presented here, View of Monte Solaro in Capri, is a typical example of the artist’s style in terms of both subject matter and technique.
Rich in atmosphere, this glimpse of Capri gains its full power through Welters’s mastery while simultaneously absorbing the gentle atmosphere of the place. Thanks to the various shades of pink interwoven with the blues typical of Capri, the artist creates a view that is both romantic and dramatic, without ever straying from the poetry and gentleness of the place. This oil-on-canvas painting depicts the Capri coastline with the island’s characteristic panorama. It dates from around 1920.
