Large Polychrome Ewe Wooden Figurine - Togo
A large figure with an almond-shaped head and an elongated neck. The arms are reduced to triangular shapes. Traces of blue, red, and light-colored polychrome paint remain. Its frontal orientation and geometric simplification lend it a monumental quality. It bears a resemblance to the “aklama,” ritual objects of the Voodoo faith used by the Ewe people of Togo. These figures are charged with interceding with various deities throughout a person’s life. They were often associated with daily activities (hunting, trade).
