Reclining Stag, Bronze — Mario Busato, Circa 1950–60
A resting stag. The antlers, fully developed, contrast with the animal’s compact silhouette. The surface is rendered with irregular brushstrokes that suggest the coat and catch the light.
Stamp of the Busato foundry, Paris. (active 1925–70). Signed “Busato” on the base.
Work by Mario Busato, known as Busato-Strauss (1902–1974), an animal sculptor. His work emphasizes close observation of the animal and a lively modeling, thus moving away from the “smooth” Art Deco style.
