Pair Of Terracotta Antefixes
A pair of terracotta antefixes, or akrokeramos, likely dating from antiquity. Each is adorned with the head of Hermes, recognizable by his winged helmet, surrounded by palmettes and volutes. Originally, antefixes were ornaments placed along the lower edge of a roof, particularly in Greek, Roman, and Etruscan architecture. In addition to their decorative function, they protected roofs from the elements and also served as talismans against evil.
