Pair Of Crystal Ewers With Silver Mounts, Late 19th-early 20th Century
A pair of crystal ewers with richly crafted sterling silver mounts, openwork at the base, decorated with acanthus leaves and scrolls in relief.
The mounts bear the Minerva hallmark and the maker's mark of Alphonse Debain (AD and a woodcock).
Alphonse Debain was a Parisian silversmith, established at 79 rue du Temple. A descendant of a long line of silversmiths, he registered his hallmark in 1883 and participated in the 1889 Universal Exhibition, where he was awarded a gold medal for his cutlery and a toilet service. During the 1900 Universal Exhibition, where he served on the jury, he also exhibited several pieces inspired by nature and featuring stylized floral decoration, reflecting the Art Nouveau style. It remained active until 1911.
