The Marseille Customs Canal By Jean Lair
Artist: Jean Lair De La Haye 1890-1964
Oil on canvas measuring 54 cm x 73 cm, plus a carved wooden frame measuring 74 cm x 93 cm
Signed at the bottom, slightly to the right: Jean Lair
This painting is a genuine historical document (circa 1920–1925) The canal was filled in starting in 1927 to make way first for a multi-story parking garage and now for a large square, the Cours d’Estienne d’Orves, with an underground parking garage
Jean Lair was in Rennes in 1890; he had associated with the Montparnasse painters before 1920, but distinguished himself very early on for his admiration of the bohemian scene in Marseille.
His studio was located at 25 Cours d’Estienne d’Orves in the building that once housed the old galleys.
His career was marked by major official commissions that allowed him to showcase his art on massive surfaces. Examples include the immense panel at the Palais du Parc Chanot, the grand staircase of the Palais de Justice, the church in Plan de Cuques, and the apse of the church in Cassis—not to mention certain frescoes in beautiful Marseille mansions, to name just a few. But aside from these major works, he painted countless portraits of prominent figures, as well as flowers, landscapes, and seascapes.
He signed his paintings “Jean Lair,” “Jean Lair de Laye,” or “Jean Lair de La Haye.”
