Bronze Sculpture Signed By Marc Robert: *the Grape Harvest*, *bacchante*, And *young Satyr* By Thiébaut Frères

Artist: Marc Robert

A significant bronze group with a nuanced brown patina depicting a Bacchic scene, a work by the French sculptor Marc Robert (1875–1962).

The composition depicts a young, nude bacchante raising above her head a basket abundantly filled with bunches of grapes and vine leaves.
At her feet, a young satyr with pointed ears, seated among the foliage, gazes at the female figure.

This scene, inspired by Greco-Roman mythology, is an allegory of the grape harvest, associated with the cult of Bacchus, the god of wine, the vine, and fertility.

The sculpture features detailed work, particularly in the modeling of the bodies, the facial expressions, and the naturalistic rendering of the foliage, grape clusters, and the woven basket.

Bronze with a brown patina featuring golden-brown and green hues, resting on a circular pedestal adorned with foliage.

Signed “Marc Robert” on the pedestal.

Bears a foundry mark reading F. Barbedienne, Thiébaut Frères, Paris, Bronzes Succ.

Marc Robert (1875–1962)

Marc Jean Robert was a French sculptor born on March 26, 1875, in Agen-d’Aveyron and died on September 13, 1962, in Rodez.

He received his initial artistic training from the Rodez-based sculptor François Mahoux, before continuing his studies at the École des Beaux-Arts in Paris, where he became a student of Alexandre Falguière and Antonin Mercié, two leading figures in late 19th-century French sculpture.

He regularly exhibited at the Salon des Artistes Français, where his work was awarded a third-class medal in 1906, followed by a gold medal in 1925. He also received the Cabrol Prize in 1917.

His body of work includes portraits, busts, allegorical compositions, as well as several public and commemorative monuments.

His works notably include portraits of the poet François Fabié, the painter Eugène Viala, the musician Léon Froment, and George Sand. He also created several war memorials, notably in Luc-la-Primaube, Laissac, Boisse-Penchot, and Sartrouville.

An artist deeply connected to his Aveyron roots, Marc Robert developed a figurative sculptural style rooted in the French academic tradition, placing great emphasis on the expressiveness of his figures and the study of the human body.
