Gustave Frédéric Michel (1851–1924), Art Nouveau-era Gilded Bronze Trinket Dish, Siot

Artist: Gustave Frédéric Michel (1851-1924)
This gilded bronze trinket dish from the Art Nouveau period is a refined example of late 19th-century French decorative arts.

The piece takes the form of an organic vessel resembling a seashell or the hollow of a protective wave.

On the upper rim, two bearded male figures embrace and wrestle vigorously in an athletic pose.

This sculpted group, often interpreted as river deities or Tritons, blends seamlessly into the material of the bowl.

The original gilding beautifully catches the light and highlights the dynamism of the muscles as well as the textured hair of the figures.

The reverse of the piece bears the incised signature “G. MICHEL”, corresponding to the sculptor Gustave Frédéric Michel (1851–1924).

This renowned artist, a medalist at the World’s Fairs, is particularly famous for his large-scale Parisian decorative works on the Alexandre III Bridge and the Bir-Hakeim Bridge.

Here, his aesthetic combines the precision of classical anatomy with the sinuous, plant-like lines characteristic of Art Nouveau.

The base also bears the circular foundry mark “SIOT-PARIS”.

The Siot-Decauville foundry, based in Paris, was at the time one of the most prestigious art foundries of the Belle Époque.

It was renowned for the technical sophistication of its castings and the excellence of its patinas.

An engraved serial number, “184 M”, is also visible beneath the base, ensuring the traceability of this exclusive edition.

The piece features harmonious dimensions of 16 x 25 x 23 cm , ideal for a desk or an entryway piece of furniture.

The reverse side of the object reveals the secrets of its craftsmanship, with its original technical assembly and bronze threaded joints.

This collector’s item is intended for enthusiasts of art bronzes and naturalistic sculptures from the very late 19th century.
