Bronze And Enamel Sailing Ship (nef), Vienna, 19th Century
This splendid decorative nef in gilded bronze and polychrome enamel is a refined example of Viennese craftsmanship, dating from the second half of the 19th century.
The work is characterized by a complex tripartite structure rich in sculptural and pictorial details:
• The hull and sails: The boat features a sinuous, ship-like profile, entirely covered in hand-painted enamels depicting vivid mythological and allegorical scenes reminiscent of the Renaissance and Baroque styles. Rising from the deck are three finely crafted gilded bronze masts, complete with shrouds, rigging, and a central topmast with a latticework design.
• The figurative mast: The hull is supported by a gilded bronze sculpture depicting a mythological sea creature (a mermaid or river caryatid) whose lower body ends in scaly coils. The figure, with arms raised, physically supports the weight of the vessel, serving as a dynamic connecting element.
• The base: The foot of the object is a rounded, contoured oval base, also entirely decorated with polychrome enamel featuring motifs of cherubs and pastoral scenes set within idyllic landscapes, finished along the edge with a knurled metal frame.
