Pair Of Still Lifes With Flowers - Rome, Mid-17th Century - Circle Of Mario Nuzzi

Artist: Cercle De Mario Nuzzi Dit Mario De' Fiori
A fine pair of oil-on-canvas paintings depicting lavish floral arrangements in gilded vases. The works feature a vibrant variety of botanical species, among which variegated tulips and carnations stand out, rendered with textured brushstrokes and a keen sensitivity to the natural form. The compositions stand out against a dark background, typical of the Baroque tradition, which enhances the vibrant colors of the petals and the luster of the vases decorated with scroll motifs. Light falls diagonally across the bouquets, creating a strong chiaroscuro contrast that lends volume and depth to the scenes. Stylistically, the paintings are firmly rooted in the Roman art scene of the mid-17th century. The compositional style and rendering of floral details show close affinities with the work of Mario Nuzzi—known as Mario dei Fiori—the leading exponent of the still-life genre in Baroque Rome.

The canvases are set in elegant antique carved and gilded wooden frames—though these frames date from a later period than the paintings—which enhance their decorative impact.
The condition is very good, and the gesso layer is consistent with the works’ period. The beautiful, gilded, and finely carved frames are not contemporary with the paintings.
