Charles Chardar (1885–1969), Lively Landscape: A Walker On A Path Lined With Olive Trees
Oil on panel (or hardboard), signed and dated “CHARDAR 1967” in the lower right corner.
A superb and luminous Mediterranean composition depicting a wooded landscape, most likely set in the South of France or the Mediterranean region. In the foreground, olive trees with gnarled, winding trunks dominate a sunlit path where one can make out the silhouette of a walker or shepherd seen from behind, carrying a staff. The background hints at a mountainous landscape silhouetted against a clear sky with soft shades of azure and pink.
The paint is vibrant and the brushwork generous, applied in rich, spontaneous impasto—characteristic of the artist’s Post-Impressionist style. The palette features deep greens, ochres, and silvery grays typical of olive tree foliage.
