Gilded Wooden Regency Mirror, 18th Century

Important 18th-century Regency-style frame in carved and gilded wood, circa 1715–1730.

This remarkable antique frame stands out for the richness of its carved decoration and the quality of its ornamentation, characteristics of the French taste for prestigious frames in the early 18th century.

The border features an elegant design of foliage scrolls, stylized shells, acanthus leaves, and interlaced motifs, punctuated by panels with a checkered background. The corners, which are particularly prominent, are adorned with large compositions of curling foliage, forming powerful corner motifs that lend the piece remarkable depth and presence.

The gilding beautifully highlights the sculpture’s modeling and accentuates the interplay of light and shadow. The interior moldings and crossbars, adorned with repetitive motifs, harmoniously structure the composition, while the side openings and openwork decorative elements lend lightness and refinement to the whole.

With its lavish ornamental vocabulary, sculpted corners, and style still marked by the arabesques and foliage motifs of the early 18th century, this frame evokes the decorative repertoire of the Regency period, at the crossroads between the grand style of Louis XIV and the more fluid forms of the Louis XV style.

It is a beautiful piece of antique décor, ideal for displaying a painting, a portrait, or a mirror, and would naturally find its place in a classical interior or a collection of 18th-century art objects.
