Galbert Family - Brown-westhead Moore & Co. Faience Tableware Set With Coat Of Arms, 46 Pieces
Provenance: the de Galbert family, Château d’Alpheran.
The coat of arms shown here, beneath a Count’s crown, is that of:
- the de Galbert family, Azure, a chevron Or accompanied by two crescents Or (the elder branch bears the gold elements, while another branch or variants may feature the chevron and crescents in silver) with the motto Pro patria virtus (Courage/Virtue for the Fatherland).
- of the Monléon family Quarter 1 (Right): Argent, a Latin cross raised (sometimes potented) Sable, set upon a mount of three cup-shaped points rising from the base. In Field 2 (Left Side): Gules, a rampant lion Or.
The wedding must have taken place between Raymond Marie Adrien Henry de Galbert and Mathilde Marie Thérèse de Monléon, celebrated on February 16, 1874, in Menton.
The Countess de Galbert, Mathilde de Monléon, was the heiress to the Château d’Alpheran, near Aix-en-Provence, from which this tableware set most certainly originated.
Thomas C. Brown-Westhead, Moore & Co. was a manufacturer of English porcelain and earthenware, active from 1862 to 1904.
Produced and decorated in England, “iron earth” tableware sets like ours were imported into France and distributed by the Grand Dépôt de Porcelaines et Faïences, located at 21 Rue Drouot in Paris.
A beautiful set reflecting the aristocracy’s lifestyle at the end of the 19th century, in keeping with the Anglomania trend.
The set is elegantly simple, in excellent condition, and includes a generous number of pieces for a beautiful table setting.
The set is in excellent condition and looks very fresh. There is a chip on the round platter and the rim of the soup tureen; the rest is virtually in mint condition.
