Dutch Sideboard Made Of Mahogany With Inlay Panels. Late 18th Century
A superb and imposing two-section Dutch sideboard, made of mahogany and mahogany veneer, likely dating from the late 18th century, around 1780–1800.
This remarkable piece stands out for the elegance of its proportions, the richness of its hardware, and the quality of its cabinetmaking.
The upper section is crowned by a majestic cornice with a double “gendarme’s cap” design, featuring generous and harmoniously drawn curves characteristic of Dutch furniture from this period.
It opens with two large doors featuring straight panels, whose outlines are delicately highlighted by marquetry fillets in herringbone patterns, alternating between different shades of wood.
The interior, which is particularly functional, features two large shelves, one narrower shelf, and three small drawers arranged side by side in the lower section.
These three drawers are adorned with identical brass knobs, finely decorated with classical female profiles surrounded by laurel wreaths.
The lower section, 87 cm high, has an elegant curve on all three sides, giving the piece a particularly refined silhouette.
It includes four drawers: Two upper drawers placed side by side. Two large drawers spanning the full width of the piece.
The drawer fronts are also accented with herringbone marquetry bands, creating a beautiful decorative continuity with the upper section.
Remarkable antique hardware: This sideboard retains beautiful brass hardware with neoclassical decoration in the Louis XVI style.
The keyholes on the doors are adorned with medallions depicting female profiles in the classical style, framed by laurel wreaths and accompanied by geometric motifs and garlands.
The drawer pulls, which are particularly intricately crafted, feature rich compositions of garlands, drapery, medallions, and architectural ornaments. All of this hardware appears to be original.
Dismantling the piece revealed no traces of old fasteners or additional screw or nail holes, supporting this hypothesis.
The locks and key are functional. Construction and Authenticity.
The piece features traditional construction, with a back made of wide oak planks and dovetail joints.
The combination of mahogany, marquetry inlays, curved lines, and neoclassical hardware attests to the craftsmanship of Dutch cabinetmakers.
Condition: In good overall condition, with a lovely patina that highlights the warm tones of the mahogany.
A few small chips in the veneer, due to the piece’s age, will be discreetly filled and stained mahogany before delivery.
