"lakeside Landscape," Oil On Canvas By Auguste Hiolle (1866–1917)

A lively landscape, likely depicting the Seine. A bright and serene scene. Signed in the lower right corner. On the reverse, a stamp bearing the inscription “Sennelier, 3 quai Voltaire in Paris, since 1887,” a shop considered the mecca of the fine arts, located across from the Louvre. The greatest artists of the era went there to stock up on supplies. This attests to the quality of the raw materials and highlights this little-known artist.

Biography: Auguste Hiolle appears to have been born on July 15, 1866, in Anticoli Corrado, Italy, and died in 1917. A genre painter, he was a member of the Society of French Artists beginning in 1895. He came from a family of artists, which notably included the sculptors Ernest-Eugène (1834–1886) and Maximilien-Louis (1843–1938).
