Bronze Bust Of Ariadne, Signed “l. Oudry éditeur” Napoleon III Period
An elegant bronze bust with a brown patina depicting Ariadne, a figure from Greek mythology, rendered here in a style inspired by antiquity. The face, slightly tilted, features idealised features, whilst the abundant, lively hair reinforces the neoclassical character of the composition.
The work rests on a quadrangular plinth and makes a striking decorative statement thanks to the balance of its silhouette and the quality of its nuanced brown patina. This 19th-century piece reflects the taste of the time, which held ancient and mythological subjects in high regard.
The inscription ‘L. Oudry Éditeur’ refers to Léopold Oudry, a renowned 19th-century French technician, chemist and art publisher. Active mainly between 1854 and 1882, he is renowned for his revolutionary use of electrotyping (an electrochemical process involving copper plating and metal deposition) applied to artistic castings and public monuments.
