THE ARTIST:
Georges Binet was a French painter born in Le Havre in 1865 and who died in Toulon in 1949. He began his training under the painter Charles Lhullier and then continued his studies in Paris, in the renowned studios of Raphaël Collin and Fernand Cormon.

Binet quickly broke away from academic style to adopt a freer approach, influenced by the Impressionists he encountered in Normandy.

A regular exhibitor at the Salon des Artistes Français between 1889 and 1939, he received a medal there in 1899 and was named a Knight of the Legion of Honor in 1937.

Like the Impressionist painters—although he never identified as one himself—Binet loved to capture scenes of everyday life. His flower market paintings were regularly exhibited and earned him a gold medal at the 1912 Salon.
