Louis XVI Chest Of Drawers With A Martin Lacquer Finish, Signed "rubestuck"
Artist: F Rubestuck
A large, half-moon-shaped chest in gold on a black background, Asian-inspired and finished in Martin varnish. On the front, the two drawers—which open without a crossbar—are decorated with a scene of pagodas in a lakeside landscape, framed by a frieze of foliage; the sides open via two central doors, themselves decorated with a scene of figures strolling across a bridge in a Chinese garden; they are framed by a frieze of foliage identical to that on the front. The cabinet, whose front stiles are decorated with flat, gilded bronze moldings, is supported by four ring-and-claw feet. The front drawers open via four mascarons and reveal two gilded bronze keyholes, identical to those on the doors. The piece is topped with a wide, recessed marble slab known as “Gris St Anne.” A Parisian piece from the Louis XVI period, circa 1780, stamped F.RUBESTUCK (1722/1785), who was admitted to the guild as a master in 1766.
