Joseph Bail, *the Schoolgirl*, Oil On Canvas - Realism, Ribot, Bonvin
Joseph BAIL (Limonest, 1862 – Paris, 1921)
The Young Schoolgirl
Oil on canvas, signed lower left
41 × 33 cm
Trained by his father, the painter Antoine-Jean Bail, Joseph Bail was part of the realist tradition of the second half of the 19th century. His intimate scenes, his attention to everyday gestures, and his muted tones bring him close to François Bonvin, Théodule Ribot, and Antoine Vollon.
Joseph Bail’s works are held, notably, at the Musée d’Orsay (“Fried Eggs”, The Housewife), the Petit Palais in Paris (Cinderella), and the Musée des Beaux-Arts in Reims (The Lingerie).
This young schoolgirl, absorbed in her writing, fits perfectly into this body of intimate and quiet works, where a subtle play of light highlights the essential elements of the painting: her face, hands, and open pages.
