Pair Of Japanese Imari Porcelain Vases, Late 19th Century

Description :

Elegant pair of Asian porcelain vases, attributed to Japan, dating from the late 19th century, circa 1880–1900, and decorated in the traditional Imari style.

These beautifully proportioned vases feature a rich and intricate hand-painted decoration combining deep cobalt blue, warm iron red, soft orange tones, and delicate gilt highlights against a creamy white porcelain background.

Each vase has a gracefully rounded baluster-shaped body, gently sloping shoulders, a narrow molded neck, and a distinctive flared opening with a delicately scalloped rim. The upper sections are decorated with alternating floral panels, stylized blossoms, and ornamental scrollwork, creating an attractive interplay of colors and patterns.

The main bodies display elaborate geometric reserves framing delicate flowering branches, chrysanthemums, and traditional Asian decorative motifs. One side features a charming composition of a small ornamental vessel resting on an elegant stand, surrounded by flowering branches. The reverse is decorated with abundant floral arrangements, including large chrysanthemums and finely detailed foliage.

The lower sections are enhanced by striking cobalt blue geometric borders, while subtle gilded accents enrich the overall composition.

Made of glazed porcelain, the vases feature underglaze blue decoration combined with overglaze enamels and gilt detailing.

As is often found on traditionally hand-painted porcelain, the decoration displays slight irregularities, including occasional minor color bleeding beyond the outlines, variations in pigment intensity, and small imperfections in the application of the enamels. These details are visible in the photographs and contribute to the individual character of each vase.

The two vases form a particularly decorative and harmonious pair, ideal for displaying on a mantelpiece, console table, or as part of a collection of Asian ceramics.
