Late 19th Century French Majolica Asparagus Dish With Drainer

A charming and unusual late 19th-century French majolica asparagus serving set, composed of a large rectangular platter and its original fitted raised drainer. Created specifically for serving asparagus at the table, this two-piece set is a wonderful example of the naturalistic tableware fashionable in France during the late 1800s.

Both pieces are modeled in relief to imitate neatly arranged bundles of asparagus, their long stalks rendered with finely incised details and their tips highlighted in deep green. Dark green raised lines form ties and delicate bows across the surface, enhancing the playful trompe-l’œil quality of the design. A contrasting cream and pale beige border completes the composition.

The upper serving piece rests on small integrated feet and incorporates a series of drainage holes, allowing excess water to collect in the platter beneath while keeping the asparagus elegantly presented at the table.
