In this charming painting, depicting a horseman resting near a post station, the Flemish tradition blends with a distinct Italianate sensibility, particularly evident in the setting and its distinctive luminosity.

The blend of styles and the distinctive manner of execution readily suggest that the work was created by a Northern artist active in Rome, or one strongly influenced by the style in vogue in the Eternal City between the 17th and 18th centuries: we are referring, in particular, to a follower of the Antwerp artist Simon Johannes van Douw. The chromatic elegance and refinement with which he delineates the figures are typical aspects of his painting.

The scene takes place outside a cottage, likely a post station for travelers, where a modest family divides the tasks of assisting the riders. We see a young boy offering water to the horse before it sets off again, the father preparing to provide it with straw, and the mother tending to her young son.

The Italian influences, evident in this painting, were adopted by many Northern European artists such as Nicolaes Berchem, Philips Wouwerman, and Johannes Lingelbach, all of whom were inspired by the master Pieter van Laer, who is documented as having lived in Rome from 1625 to 1639 and is considered the founder of the Bamboccianti school.

It is not known whether Simon Van Douw ever visited Italy: the few certain biographical details indicate that in 1655 and 1656 he is documented as an independent master in Antwerp, where he likely spent most of his life and where Carel de Fonteyn and Pieter van Bloemen trained under him. However, a trip to Italy cannot be ruled out, even though there were plenty of prints and paintings to which artists had access and from which they could draw inspiration—one need only think of Philips Wouwerman, who owned countless drawings by van Laer.
The painting, in excellent condition, features a professionally executed relining.
