Large canvas by Robert Detheux created around 1980, directly from his studio collection.
The composition centers on a fragmented yet cohesive figure, constructed from crumpled, almost sculptural forms that unfold within a dark, textured space. The face, absorbed by shadow, and the body in tension give the work a presence that is both fragile and powerful.
Here we find an artistic approach reminiscent of Giacometti’s: the human figure reduced to its essence, confronted by the void that surrounds it, with particular attention paid to material and volume.
A large-scale work—a rarity in Detheux’s oeuvre (as the majority of his work consists of works on paper)— it attests to the artist’s maturity in the 1980s, a period when he was still blending Surrealist and Expressionist influences with a more tactile exploration of form.
