Totai Shippo Planters. Japan, 19th Century. Cloisonné On Ceramic
TOTAI SHIPPO Planters. Japan, 19th century. Cloisonné on ceramic
Dimensions: 29 cm high by 28 cm in diameter
Good condition
The manufacturing technique for this type of vase was very complex: in fact, the raw ceramic base was covered with copper partitions forming different cells according to a predetermined design. On our planter, the bottom has been reworked and textured to resemble tree bark, a delicate process that originally resulted in a significant amount of scrap. It is because of this manufacturing complexity that totai shippo vases were produced only for a short period and are now highly sought after when they are in very good condition.
