In sculpture—particularly during the 18th century—an "adoration scene" refers to a work depicting one or more angels in a posture of sacred contemplation, prayer, or profound devotion. Such statues of adoring angels were typically created in pairs to be placed on either side of a tabernacle, high altar, or nativity scene, facing the divine. In the 18th century, the adoration scene moved away from static contemplation to embrace highly theatrical Baroque and Rococo movements: bodies sway, hands clasp fervently, and faces express intense emotion.
