17th-century Flemish School
Oil on oak panel (two joined panels)
Presented in a simple, molded black frame in the Flemish style.
Overall dimensions with frame: 77 x 65 cm. Panel alone: 60 x 48 cm
This beautiful composition depicts a subject much beloved in Flemish painting: the moment when the Infant Jesus slips a ring onto Saint Catherine’s finger, sealing their mystical union. The scene is tender, almost intimate, despite the solemn presence of the Virgin and the angels raising a rich red canopy above the sacred group. Around them, figures of saints complete the scene, like so many silent witnesses.
The painting draws direct inspiration from the major work created by Otto van Veen in 1589, now housed at the Royal Museums of Fine Arts of Belgium. This composition enjoyed immense success and was widely copied in the 17th century, both in workshops and among circles close to the master.
A particularly interesting version is housed at the Musée des Beaux-Arts in Bordeaux. Smaller and brighter, it demonstrates just how widely Van Veen’s model circulated and was adapted to meet the needs of patrons: works intended for private devotion, altarpieces, or even decorative pieces for patrician residences. The painting we present here is fully in line with this tradition, yet possesses its own distinctive sensibility, particularly in the rendering of the drapery and the softness of the faces.
Otto van Veen (1556–1629), often referred to as Vaenius, is one of the leading figures of Flemish painting at the turn of the Renaissance and the Baroque periods. A humanist, traveler, and connoisseur of Italian art, he successfully blended Raphael’s elegance with the expressive warmth of the North. Based in Antwerp, he ran a very active studio and trained numerous artists, the most famous of whom was Peter Paul Rubens, who owed part of his visual and intellectual education to him.
Van Veen was also a creator of emblems, highly regarded in his time, blending images with moral maxims. His religious work, of which the Mystical Marriage of Saint Catherine is an emblematic example, is distinguished by its clarity, balance, and a profoundly human tenderness.
