Museum – Rolling Pin – Bread And Butter Stamp – Dolphin, French Coat Of Arms – Folk Art
18th century
France
A rare and remarkable turned and carved boxwood rolling pin dating from the 18th century, featuring rich ornamental decoration combining the royal arms of France, a crowned dolphin, and various plant and floral motifs.
This object is distinguished by its dual function, combining a rolling pin with two imprints designed to stamp bread or butter, located at each of its ends.
Cylindrical in shape, it features a meticulously crafted design consisting of a central body carved in relief, framed by two broad, molded ends that serve as stamping dies.
The central section features a series of circular medallions linked by elegant plant scrolls and leafy branches, accompanied by depictions of birds, hearts, and acorns. These medallions contain various floral and geometric motifs, precisely carved into the boxwood.
The two ends feature a particularly interesting design, directly associated with the iconography of the French monarchy.
The first end, used as a bread or butter stamp, is adorned with the coat of arms of France, depicted as a shield bearing three fleurs-de-lis—arranged in groups of two and one—surmounted by a royal fleur-de-lis crown. The entire design is surrounded by a circular inscription carved in relief.
The second end, also intended for stamping, features a crowned dolphin, depicted in a circular composition, its body curved and covered with finely detailed scales. This depiction directly references the emblems of the Dauphin of France, a title held by the heir apparent to the crown.
The combination of the royal coat of arms and the Dauphin forms a particularly interesting iconographic ensemble, bringing together the symbols of the French monarchy and its dynastic succession.
Boxwood, a wood particularly prized for its density, fine grain, and durability, allows for meticulous carving here, particularly in the rendering of the coat of arms, the dolphin’s scales, and the various plant motifs.
This object attests to the craftsmanship of 18th-century woodturners and woodcarvers, as well as to the importance placed on the ornamentation of household items in folk art production.
