Louis XVI-era Bidet Chair
A rare late 18th-century walnut bidet chair, complete and in very good condition. The seat and backrest are upholstered in the original leather (showing signs of wear). It has retained its earthenware bidet and its interior zinc lining. The top of the backrest features a small flap concealing storage compartments designed to hold toiletries, sponges, or scented oils. The 18th-century bidet chair (or “meuble de propreté”) is an iconic invention of French cabinetmaking and the history of personal hygiene during the reigns of Louis XV and Louis XVI. A testament to the refinement of the aristocratic classes of the time, this toilet chair was designed to blend discreetly into boudoirs or bedrooms.
