1588 Marian Devotional Pewter Plaque Virgin Mary Renaissance Oval Framed Relief
An evocative Marian devotional plaque dated 1588, fashioned in pewter and presenting the Virgin Mary in sculptural relief. This late 16th-century sacred artwork combines the intimacy of a devotional image with the formal elegance of Renaissance medallic portraiture.
The Virgin appears as a veiled bust facing right, her composed features framed by carefully articulated drapery. A radiant halo extends around her head, expressing her sanctity and spiritual presence. The restrained profile and flowing folds give the composition a contemplative character, well suited to private prayer and Marian devotion.
A raised Latin inscription follows the oval perimeter within a finely beaded border. Clearly visible wording includes “SVCCVRRE NOBIS”, meaning “come to our aid,” reinforcing the image's role as an appeal for the Virgin’s intercession. Other lettering identifies the Blessed Virgin Mary, although wear makes a complete transcription uncertain.
The plaque belongs to the broader tradition of Renaissance devotional plaquettes and religious portrait medals, in which sacred subjects were translated into compact metal reliefs. Its classical profile format and encircling inscription reflect that artistic vocabulary without requiring an attribution to a particular maker.
The pewter displays a richly varied grey surface, with darker recesses and brighter raised details accentuating the modelling. It is presented against red fabric in a gold-finished oval wooden frame, secured by two visible metal retainers. The backing and hanging ring indicate a later display arrangement.
In good overall condition, this framed devotional relief offers an appealing combination of Marian iconography, Renaissance design, and historic character.
ConditionGood overall condition, with surface wear, pitting, scratches, and small edge irregularities to the pewter. The relief and much of the lettering remain well defined. The frame shows finish wear and fine cracking; the later backing and hanging ring are present.
