French School, Circa 1860 : “the Red Umbrella”
French Schoolcirca 1860–70: “The Red Umbrella,” oil on canvas, 16.5 ×21.4 cm, mounted in a lovely gold-leaf frame, 23 × 28 cm.
A peasant couple is returning from the market, braving the storm that rages over the sea in thedistance.
The woman is riding her horse, baskets in her arms, wearing blue trousers and shielding herself from the rain with her red cape and umbrella, while the man walks beside her under his large hat and protected by a biaude, which leads me to believe the scene is set in Normandy, although this attire was wide spread through out the region north of the Loire.
