Large Journeyman's Compass From The High Period, 17th Century.

Rare Large Forged-Iron Journeyman's Drafting Compass - High Period, 17th Century – 65 cm

Description:
Exceptional and rare large carpenter’s or master builder’s compass (floor-marking compass) made of hand-forged iron. An authentic folk art museum piece dating from the 17th century (High Period). The multi-blade hinge mechanism (often referred to as a leaf hinge or interlocking disc hinge) is a strong indicator that allows the piece to be dated to the 17th century, or even the late 16th century.

  • Dimensions: Total length of 65 cm, ideal for tracing large-scale geometric developments in roof framing or stereotomy.
  • Remarkable craftsmanship: Articulated head featuring a multi-blade hinge with interlocking, riveted discs—a hallmark of high-precision 17th-century metalwork. The friction mechanism consistently maintains the spread with no lateral play.
  • Folk art decorations: The tops of the arms are beautifully crafted and openworked with a traditional heart-shaped motif (or inverted ace of spades), a powerful symbol of the guild tradition. Outer edges chiseled with geometric notches and semicircular indentations that serve both to improve the ergonomic grip and as alignment markers.

Condition:
Superb overall original condition. Both handles are complete with their original tips. The iron features a magnificent antique patina—sound and dark—with no perforating oxidation. The item has been handled and preserved with great care. A highly decorative and historic centerpiece for any collector of antique tools, folk art, or the guild tradition. Please note that the compass does not close completely.
