Pair Of Bronze Figures Of Hippomenes And Atalanta, Cast By Barbedienne.
After Guillaume Coustou (1677–1746), cast by Barbedienne. A pair of bronzes depicting Hippomenes throwing a golden apple to slow down Atalanta. Each rests on a square-section base of sea-green marble (with minor chips). Signed "Barbedienne" on the mound. The model was created in 1712 by Guillaume Coustou for the Carp Pond (*Bassin des Carpes*) at the Château de Marly, the private residence of King Louis XIV. According to Ovid, in Book X of the *Metamorphoses*, Atalanta promised to marry whoever could defeat her in a footrace. One of her suitors, Hippomenes, dropped golden apples from the Garden of the Hesperides during the race; Atalanta paused to gather them, allowing Hippomenes to win the contest.
