Capipote: Penitent Christ, Polychrome Wood, Catalonia, Spain, 19th Century, Articulated Figurine
Capipote, or an articulated figure representing Christ kneeling in penance.
A capipote (or a statue of the Santos type) refers to a very specific category of sacred art: a religious procession figure. When it depicts Christ, it is a polychrome wooden sculpture designed to be dressed in real fabric garments during liturgical festivals and religious processions.
Only the visible parts—the head (often marked by an expression of suffering or devotion), the hands and sometimes the feet—are finely carved and painted in naturalistic detail. The rest of the body is generally simplified to the extreme. Some figures have articulated arms (at the elbows and shoulders) so that they can easily change position, fold their hands, or carry liturgical accessories, such as a cross in the case of the Christ of the Passion.
This particularly theatrical style of religious statuary enjoyed widespread popularity from the 17th to the 19th century, mainly in Italy (particularly the Neapolitan tradition) and in Spain (Catalonia).Date: late 18th century or early 19th century
