Kutchinsky 18ct Yellow Gold & Black Onyx Modernist Statement Ring, London 1972

An exceptional and highly sculptural 18ct yellow gold and black onyx statement ring by Kutchinsky, fully hallmarked for London 1972.

A striking example of British luxury jewellery from the early 1970s, the ring combines Kutchinsky’s characteristic bold use of coloured hardstone with elaborate textured goldwork. Its dramatic scale and architectural construction give the piece an unmistakably Modernist, avant-garde presence.

The centrepiece is a substantial polished black onyx rectangular openwork plaque, softly rounded at the corners and designed almost as an architectural frame. The deep, glossy black surface provides a dramatic contrast against the richness of the 18ct yellow gold.

The onyx is incorporated into an extraordinary sculptural gold construction. Multiple fine strands of textured yellow gold form the shank and sweep upwards around the onyx, gathering into prominent rope-like knots and wrapped gold terminals on opposing sides. Viewed from different angles, the construction becomes particularly impressive, revealing the complex three-dimensional arrangement of the gold wires around and through the onyx element.

Rather than relying upon conventional stone setting, the design makes the setting itself an important decorative feature. The combination of polished geometric onyx and organic, almost woven goldwork is quintessentially representative of the adventurous jewellery design of the 1970s.

The ring is reassuringly substantial, weighing approximately 26.5 grams, and has considerable presence when worn.

The interior is fully hallmarked, including the Kutchinsky maker’s mark, 18ct gold standard mark, London assay mark and date letter for 1972, providing an unusually precise attribution and date.
